Glory of Maa Ganga
There is no greater mantra than Om , there is no greater women than Maa Parvati , there is no Reality than Guru , there is no greater knowledge than Self-Knowledge . Similarly it is believed there is no greater place of pilgrimage than the Holy Ganga.
The Holy water of Divine Mother Ganga is akin to the nectar. The Water of holy Ganga is the only one of its kind , which by virtue of itys medicinal properties doesn’t putrefy even if kept for years . The water of other rivers decays and starts giving a foul smell in a short span . That is the reason why holy Ganga has been mentioned as the greatest doctor for all diseases.
The British East India Co. used only Ganges water on its ships during the three month journey back to England , because it stayed “sweet & fresh” . Emperor Akbar called it the “water of immortality” and always traveled with a supply .
Our scriptures have been singing praises of the nectarine water of holy Ganga for thousands of years. The 20th century science too has acknowledged it. What is it that makes the water of holy Ganga so unique ? Why is it that it doesn’t rot even when kept for years ? How does it cure diseases when used for drinking or bathing ? Indian & Western scientist have studied these questions for centuries & have concluded that seers have expressed the truth in the prayer : “Salutations to her who is the form of all medicines ”
Film producer Julian Crandall Hollick searched for the “mysterious X factor” that gives Ganges water its mythical reputation. He started his investigation looking for the water`s special properties at the river`s source in the Himalayas . There wild plants , radioactive rocks, and unusually cold , fast – running water combine to form the river . D. S. Bhargava , a retired professor of hydrology, told Hollick , “Organic materials usally exhaust a river`s available oxygen and the water starts putrefying . But in the Ganges , an unknown substance ,or X factor , acts on the organic materials and bacteria and kills them” . Bhargava furthee added that the Ganges ` self purifying quality leads her oxygen level to 25 times higher than any other river in the world . Jay Ramchandran , amolecular biologist in a short science lesson , explains why the Ganges does not spread diseases among the millions of Indians who bathe in it . It is only due to its extraordinary ability to retain oxygen.
One of the astonishing facts revealed by research scientists is that the water of holy Ganga contains millions of bacteriophage which consume pathogenic bacteria . Bacteriophage is a virus , a parasite of bacteria , which is very small (ten thousandth part of a centimeter ) in size and covered with a protein shell (capsid) . One of its amazing properties is that it is always present in the water of holy Ganga and can survive for thousands or lakhs of years even with out food . Whenever any pathogenic or putrefying bacteria enter the water , the bacteriophage , in millions , attack them & destroy them . If one suffering from diseases drinks the water of holy Ganga , the friendly bacteriophage enter his body with the water and destroy the harmful bacteria . The patient starts recovering gradually.
Where do these bacteria – devouring bacteriophage come from ? It is not yet known , but they are found every where , right from thr origin of holy Ganga to the place where it merges in to sea . They are destroyed by boiling . Therefor , the water of holy Ganga should not be boiled.
In the Indian culture , there already exists a believe that the water of holy Ganga should not be boiled . Mother Ganga is considered a blessing for the people of this country . Lord Shiva has gon to the extent of extolling her in the following , ‘ O Govinda , Ganga becomes pleased wit the devotion of one who knows the greatness of Ganga even if he were to be an undeserving person , even if he livesfar off . They whose minds have been deluded by ignorance , attachment , greed etc. do not have any faith in Dharma and particulary in Ganga ‘ Thousands of salutations to Mother Ganga who is the form of Lords Brahma , Vishnu and Rudra.
